The Wonderland of Hayley Welsh

Check out Hayley Welsh, a newish Perth local whose exhibition “Wonderland” is running for just another 2 weeks at Level 2, Carillon City, Murray St Perth.  The exhibition is a collection of Hayley’s latest creations using found objects.  Shaun Tan describes Hayley’s work as having ‘an intriguing sense of a larger narrative going on behind odd little fragments.’   We certainly like the sense of mystery and curiosity in Hayley’s work.    A deep questioning exudes out of her work beyond the gentle depiction of quirky creatures existing within a disturbingly familiar fantastical world.  Hayley grew up in Blackburn, a former mill town in the north west of England.  She attended Blackpool College of Arts and graduated in 2008 with first class honours.  She has subsequently exhibited internationally in London, Newcastle and New York and in 2010 won the prestigious David Cook Drawing Award in the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art, and the Hedland Art Award for under 25’s, in the same year.  Hayley moved to Perth in 2009 and “Wonderland” is her second Australian exhibition.  http://www.hayleywelsh.com
