Check out Hayley Welsh, a newish Perth local whose exhibition “Wonderland” is running for just another 2 weeks at Level 2, Carillon City, Murray St Perth. The exhibition is a collection of Hayley’s latest creations using found objects. Shaun Tan describes Hayley’s work as having ‘an intriguing sense of a larger narrative going on behind odd little fragments.’ We certainly like the sense of mystery and curiosity in Hayley’s work. A deep questioning exudes out of her work beyond the gentle depiction of quirky creatures existing within a disturbingly familiar fantastical world. Hayley grew up in Blackburn, a former mill town in the north west of England. She attended Blackpool College of Arts and graduated in 2008 with first class honours. She has subsequently exhibited internationally in London, Newcastle and New York and in 2010 won the prestigious David Cook Drawing Award in the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art, and the Hedland Art Award for under 25’s, in the same year. Hayley moved to Perth in 2009 and “Wonderland” is her second Australian exhibition. http://www.hayleywelsh.com

We are awe inspired by Murray McKay’s road to recovery over the last 3months. Murray was struck down by an extremely rare condition (one case reported in Australia every 2 years) of having an artery enlarged on his spinal cord in September 2012. Effectively, this shut down the lower half of his body. He was told by his Neurosurgeon that he may never walk again. Certainly, if the condition had not been found when it was, he would have become a paraplegic. While some may think they were very unlucky to be struck down which such a condition, Murray also comments on his great luck that he is up and walking again and expected to make a full recovery. Murray explains that recovering from this condition was similar to recovering from a major crash. “I had never spent a day in hospital prior to this illness, I was told that my conditioning and the fact that I have always looked after my body, helped me a lot. It has changed me as a person, I literally smell the roses every day and feel that I am blessed. I am more empathetic towards people and don’t get stressed out about things that I did prior to my condition. It has motivated me and strengthened me as a person.” Murray has been competing in arm-wrestling most of his life (beginning at age 12) when he was challenged by a couple of school bullies to an arm-wrestling match. He convincingly beat them and this gave him the confidence to pursue the sport further.

Here are a few more of Murray’s achievements:

1994 World Fire-fighter Arm-wrestling Champion (Perth)
2004 World Arm-wrestling Championships 7th Masters Right hand division & top 15 in the Open Right hand division (Durban, South Africa) (First Australian to be invited to participant in World Championships)
2007 World Police and Fire-fighter Arm-wrestling Champion (Adelaide). Our image features Murray fighting an opponent from Kazakhstan at this competition.

2011 World Police and Fire-fighters Runner Up Arm-wrestling Champion (New York).

Murray’s goal is to compete in the World Police & Fire-fighter Games in Belfast in August 2013 and the Australian Arm-Wrestling Championships later in the year. We wish Murray all the very best for a continued speedy recovery. We’ll keep you posted.

Burgermeister are long time supporters of strongman Murray McKay, Western Australia’s best-known arm wrestler having competed in championships across the world, most recently taking out the silver medal at the World Police and Fire Games held in New York in September 2011.

Murray was set to take on Australia’s best at the National Arm wrestling Championships in Melbourne in December 2012. However, a recent injury will keep him out of the competition. Commiserations Murray. However, he will continue to take a lead role in mentoring Western Australia’s best.

When Murray’s not hard at it training, you might catch him at Burgermeister tucking into his favourite burger, our mighty “Beef The Lot”.

We are big fans of local emerging artist Andy Quilty whose recent exhibitions at Linton and Kay have been a huge success. Andy’s work focuses on the suburban Australian male and he finds plenty of insipriation from the Rockinham friends he grew up with. After working for 10 years as a commercial surfboard artist in Western Australia and the United States, in 2009 Andy turned his focus towards his personal art practice. With a grunge aesthetic, Andy’s works are characterised by aggressive and rapid marks made with a combination of ballpoint pen, aerosol and auto enamel paint. His latest exhibition FIFO focuses on a unique point in our state’s history where the fly-in-fly-out blue collar worker is now financially valued at an unprecedented level. This change has been met by ridicule and elitist sentiment by many and Andy’s work provides an honest record of the FIFO worker and he seks to elevate their status beyond simplified cliché’s and free from any romanticism. Check out his work here. (www.andyquilty.com)

Although Call Collector may be a new name in the Australian music scene, they don’t seem like a new band. The songs have a depth and polish more typical of seasoned veterans, and it’s hard to believe that the upcoming studio album “Perceptionist” will be the band’s first release.

That’s not to say that the band has come from nowhere. Sebastien Bouchard, Scott Robinson (no longer with the band) & Mike Cullingford formed Call Collector in 2007. With a diverse range of musical backgrounds and a wealth of songwriting experience behind them, the band set their immediate focus on refining their sound and working hard to craft the album that would announce the band to the world.

With recording engineer Kieran Kenderessy (Birds of Tokyo), “Perceptionist” was born. The partnership was serendipitous, with Kieran now playing bass guitar in the band. A month in London working in Miloco Studios’ famous “Engine Room” led to the band working with producer/mixer/engineer Donald Clark (Muse, Guns ‘n’ Roses).

As the three friends prepare for the release of Perceptionist in early February 2013, Burgermeister will keep you updatd on the launch, gigs and where to buy the album.

If you want to have a preview scan the code below or visit iTunes for the debut single “Mandy”.

Many thanks to Stormie Mills for his artwork to create the album cover.
